CelluPac – a biobased alternative to EPS – step 2

The purpose of the project is to continue the development and the optimization of a new sustainable material based on renewable resources that can replace fossil-based EPS (Expanded Polystyrene) in packaging materials. The project’s innovative idea was to replace EPS with a cellulose-based alternative, a technical solution to be directly implementable in today’s production lines of molded EPS-materials and the hypothesis has been validated in Step 1. The innovative idea in this project will be further examined in terms of material design and processability having the technology demonstrated in operational environment. A lot of effort will be put on the scale-up techniques, but the project will also involve an extensive market analysis, involvement of customers and a techno-economic evaluation.

Participants

LindePac AB, MoRe Research Örnsköldsvik AB, BillerudKorsnäs AB, Nouryon Pulp and Performance Chemicals AB and Karlstads Universitet.
