Aim to be risk-taking and to capture new, visionary ideas — or hypotheses — with major potential. This type of initiative has two stages. Stage one covers the testing of hypotheses and the associated reporting over a shorter period of time. In stage two, there is the possibility of applying for additional funding to continue working on a confirmed hypothesis.

Innovation projects are BioInnovation’s main effort and aim to develop an entire field. These are major, system-changing projects for collaboration-based projects, knowledge-sharing and systematic learning that aim to contribute to, and benefit from, the transition to a bio-based economy.

Collaboration projects are carried out with separate financing and complement BioInnovation's other operations. Collaboration projects can also be initiatives together with other strategic innovation programs.

Thematic calls meet a broad need and aim to develop areas that need special stimulation. BioInnovation defines the focus of these projects, while the projects themselves define the challenge.
