Carbon sink concrete – from potential to tens of thousands of CO2 – step 2

Category: Hypothesis testing projects

The project ran between November 2022 and April 2025.

The project developed a complete value chain from biogenic waste to CE-marked concrete products with biochar. A key result was the development and launch of climate-improved light weight concrete blocks (e.g. Murblock Bas ECO), which were nominated for a major Swedish construction award (Nordbyggs Guldmedalj).

Another key result was a new pyrolysis-calcination process and a patent-pending carbon composite enabling cement replacement by over 30% in conventional concrete. Several products, including dry mortar and design elements for public spaces under the design brand Gray, reached market maturity. Three verified EPDs were issued for different products within the project. The project laid the groundwork for large-scale use of biochar in construction, combining carbon sequestration with industrial decarbonization.

Participants

Nordiczero AB, , Finja Betong AB, Nordvästra Skånes Renhållnings AB, Biokolprodukter Global AB, Ecotopic AB and Helsingborg municipality.

Budget

The project’s total budget was 4,6 MSEK.
