Carbon sink concrete – from potential to tens of thousands of CO2 – step 2

Category: Hypothesis testing projects

The project develops climate-smart concrete and cement based construction products, which in total sequester more carbon than the total carbon dioxide footprint from the products emissions. An overall objective is to use biochar other than that is currently demanded for soil applications. By incorporating charred biomass, a stable and traceable carbon sink is created.

The potential is huge and the need for climate improved materials within the sector is very high. The project aims to make the process operational and establish at least one local value chain from biomass extraction, to the sale of construction products and adapted biochar as a concrete additive. An overall goal for the project is to get one, or more, commercially viable products on the market.

Participants

Biokolprodukter Global AB, Finja Betong AB, Nordvästra Skånes Renhållnings AB, Ecotopic AB and Helsingborg Municipality.

Budget & time plan

The project’s total budget is 4,8 MSEK and the project runs during two years – between November 2022 and November 2024.
