New sustainable specialty chemicals for the pulp and paper industry – step 2

Category: Hypothesis testing projects

The project ran between June 2022 and May 2024.

The goal of the project, to develop a new generation of surface-active agents for the pulp and paper industry based on renewable raw materials, has been achieved.

A synthesis method for synthesizing surfactants, entirely from bio-based raw materials, has been developed on small laboratory scale at Chalmers and scaled up to larger laboratory scale at BIM Kemi. These chemicals have shown good performance in laboratory-scale performance tests for relevant applications in the pulp and paper industry. The next step is to continue scaling up the synthesis to pilot and full scale at BIM Kemi and then test the products at full scale at a relevant customer to BIM Kemi in the pulp and paper industry.

Participants

BIM Kemi Sweden AB, Chalmers University of Technology, Rottneros AB and Lantmännen ekonomisk förening.

Budget

The project’s total budget was 6 MSEK.
