Technical and market evaluation of production of stabilized pyrolysis oil via catalytic hydrotreatment – step 2

Category: Hypothesis testing projects

The project ran between November 2022 and November 2024. Due to Cortus’ bankruptcy, no final reporting has been possible.

Cortus AB’s concept, WoodRoll®, is based on a combination of pyrolysis and gasification with the main purpose to convert residues from the forest industry to a pure bio-based synthesis gas. As a complement to the existing technology, it is of interest to expand the concept to become more flexible and be able to extract high-quality bio-based fuels and chemicals via upgrading of the pyrolysis vapors together with the use of internally produced hydrogen/synthesis gas.

In the first hypothesis project, the production of stabilized pyrolysis oil, via catalytic hydrotreatment of pyrolysis vapors, was verified. The purpose of this project was to further evaluate the concept with regards to both a technical and market perspectives.

Participants

Cortus AB, Preem and RISE AB.

Budget & time plan

The project’s total budget is 6,2 MSEK.
