Nonwoven Cellulose matrix for Extracorporeal Immunoadsorption – step 1

Category: Hypothesis testing projects

Immunoadsorption is important in several clinical applications but is dominated by fossil-based or unsustainably manufactured adsorbents. This project aims to replace such materials with renewable cellulosic nonwovens produced via the green solution blown technique. In the project, cellulosic nonwovens with high surface area will be functionalized with ligands using bioconjugation protocols established by VitroSorb.

Subsequently, the immunoadsorption capacity of the cellulosic prototype will be tested by removing antibodies from human blood. In parallel, the commercialization potential will be assessed by identifying industrial nonwoven producers and analyzing the market for sustainable alternatives.

Participants

VitroSorb AB and RISE Research Institutes of Sweden AB.

Budget & time plan

The project’s total budget is 1 MSEK and the project runs for 9,5 months – between June 2024 and February 2025.
