New bio-based high- and low-pressure laminates with lignin-based resin for the construction and furniture industry – step 1

Category: Hypothesis testing projects

The project ran between November 2022 and October 2023.

The aim of the study was to investigate whether lignin can replace phenol formaldehyde resin in high-pressure and low-pressure laminates. A high-pressure laminate has been produced with roughly 50% lignin derivatives with similar properties to a laminate from phenolic resin impregnated papers. The laminates impregnated with roughly 50% lignin derivatives have a similar microstructure to those with phenolic resin. The resin appears to be well distributed in the crosssection, but the laminate has slightly larger pores in the plane, which may be due to slightly higher pressure. Bubbles associated with climatic cycling indicate non-optimized parameters. Optimizing material and process parameters should solve the problems. As a result, all parties want to proceed with the development of the laminate.
