Efficiency enhancement of silicon solar cells by applying a bio-based material from algae – step 1

The project ran between May 2019 and December 2019.

The purpose of the project was to investigate whether the efficiency of a solar cell can be enhanced by applying frustules directly on the surface. This has been verified and we have been able to demonstrate how the efficiency enhancement correlates with the amount of material applied. However, further optimization is required to reach an industrially repeatable offer to the market.

A market study related to the solar cell eco system as well as an analysis of suitable business models, including preferred markets related to type of solar cells, has been part of the project as well.


Swedish Algae Factory AB (SAFAB) and Stiftelsen Chalmers Industriteknik (CIT).


The project’s budget was 1 000 000 SEK.
