Butanediol from forest based residual streams

The chemical industry is currently highly dependent on oil, coal and natural gas. In order to reduce the carbon footprints, it is important that the availability of sustainable platform chemicals, e.g. biobased butanediol (BDO), increases. The forest industry, which is one of the biggest industries in Sweden, generates large volume of residual streams, such as fiber reject and saw dust, which can be converted into high-value chemicals. The aim of the project is to convert such residual streams into fermentable sugars for conversion into the high-value platform chemical butanediol.
