Chemical recycling: from bio-based raw materials to safe, clean, and efficient fertilizers

Bioindustries generate significant amounts of materials and waste that contain essential nutrients like potassium and phosphorus. Many of these bio-derived streams are landfilled due to contamination with heavy metals, while others are spread on land as low-quality fertilizers. These are not optimal solutions. Chemical processing to recover the nutrients contained as fertilizer compounds comes with many advantages and significantly improves the sustainability of bio-based technologies.

In this project, the Consortium led by EasyMining investigated a novel approach to recycle high purity fertilizers from bio-derived materials, with a focus on decontamination and production of high purity potassium salts. The validation of the recovered fertilizers included agronomical tests, and quality and performance assessments. A market analysis, LCA and implementation plan were carried out to further investigate the commercialization potential of the developed technology.
