Textile- and specialty cellulose from agricultural residues – step 1

Category: Hypothesis testing projects

The project ran between November 2024 and May 2025

This project explored the potential of utilizing agricultural side streams to produce textile and specialty cellulose, from a technical, commercial, and sustainability perspective. The objective was to develop a process for producing a high-purity cellulose material from agricultural residues with a cellulose content exceeding 90%, while ensuring efficient utilization of the process’s side streams. Moreover, based on knowledge of customer and market requirements, it was desired to recommend the application area(s) in which the developed cellulose material can be used. Through a multi-step process developed in the project a final material which meets the purity standards required for a plurality of textile and specialty cellulose applications was achieved. The final material surpassed the project goal of cellulose content, and additionally, the process allows for the efficient recovery and valorization of solubilized byproducts for material and energy purposes.
