BtoMI – Low value biomass to high quality manufacturing industry

Manufacturing processes requires in many cases process heat, e.g. to dry tissue paper, firing ceramics, melt steel, aluminium etc. To meet the high demands of quality, consistency and costs the conventional solution for high quality heat generation is to combust natural gas or LPG, with fossil CO2 emissions as a result. At the same time, vast amount of biomass waste streams is not valorized properly.

This project will adapt and develop an innovative gasification and burner solution utilizing biomass feedstock to meet the demands from the manufacturing industries on both cost, quality and availability. One specific feedstock that will be evaluated is cellulose fiber waste from tissue production. The tissue producer Rexcell will represent both a supplier of feedstock and a reference user of the technology. Swedish Meva Energy and Finnish Enviroburners will be technology developers in the project and supported by the research partners RISE Energy Technology Center and RISE Bioeconomy.

Participants

Meva Energy, Rexcell, Enviroburners, RISE Energy Technology Center and RISE Bioeconomy.

Budget & time plan

The project’s budget is 9 476 000 SEK (from Swedish partners) plus 229 000 EUR (from Finnish partners) and the project runs between November 2019 and December 2021.
